Freedom of the City
Name
Sinead Lunn
Description
My Drama Individual Project (IP) is a monologue that follows an Irish girl from Derry during the protests against the British soldiers during the 1970s. During my piece, I explore the police brutality experienced by Irish Catholics, as well as raise awareness about the nature of protesting. Initially, my monologue was to entertain and inform the audience about the Irish troubles, however, it has evolved in recent months with the rise of Black Lives Matter protests. Ultimately, I want to use my monologue to show people how protests are an important voice for the community and also how experiences of police brutality haven’t changed. At one point I show my character being assaulted with rubber bullets and tear gas, similar to what’s happening today in countries like the USA.
Influences
I used the play 'Freedom of the City' by Brian Friel and was inspired by the TV show Derry girls, as well as my parent’s own experience.

For my Drama Individual Project, I chose to use physical comedy. How to Grow a Cotton Wool Generation
Name
Jan Manasan
Description
My Society and Culture Personal Interest Project is a sociological study on the Cotton Wool Generation - the overprotected children and teens of today. My project investigates how and why the ‘Cotton Wool’ generation came into being, focusing on the impact this has on both society and the development of children. The nature of parenting, school environments and children’s attitudes and behaviours have changed over time. These changes have prevented children from effectively developing emotional and social skills. As a Filipina girl growing up in Australia, I compared parenting in the Philippines and Australia, which led me to surface insights into the Cotton Wool generation.
Influences
In the creation of my Major Work, I was inspired by my own experiences. I explored my own personal issues concerning restrictions imposed by my parents. This helped me understand the relationship between my experiences and the social ramifications of overprotected children.

Empathy's Decay
Name
Anya Maclure
Description
My Society and Culture Personal Interest Project responds to the question ‘Are we being socially-conditioned to limit our empathy for others?’. Throughout my project, I aimed to deepen my social and cultural literacy. I conducted my own research, as well as using secondary sources, to support my hypothesis that surrounds the impact of overexposure to desensitising material that is available through various forms of media on empathy. I found that there wasn't a definitive answer to my question as there are so many factors that affect levels of empathy. My project was a great opportunity to understand a topic I feel so passionately about.

FLOWW
Name
Madelyne Su
Description
My Design and Technology Major Work is a modular planter system designed to simplify and encourage indoor gardening. I wanted to design an alternative solution that would be simple to use and adaptable to any indoor environment. This modular planting system is intended for use in high rise buildings such as offices and apartments with a degree of interchangeability, reflecting the fast-paced nature of modern life. The planters come in varying sizes and can be arranged in different configurations on a magnetised backing board or unit designed to hand over a desk partition. Each planter has a built-in drainage system which collects excess water that can be reused, allowing the watering process mess-free and sustainable - the inspiration for the shape, colour and name of my product.
Influences
My passion for the environment and climate change, as well as design and architecture, heavily influenced my research into plants and trends in high-rise/urban living and ultimately my design. My research into existing products further emphasised the need for a product that is not only practical but highlights and complements the sculptural elements of a plant.
A Reflection of Man in a Landscape
Name
Rhea Sanjay
Description
My Visual Art Major Work is built from the concept of the ego of man in tension with nature. It consists of a large oil painting, 40 clay heads, burnt wood and road signs. The piece is very romantic, focusing on the idea of nature being everlasting and man being mortal. The painting depicts a barren landscape due to the actions of humans, yet there are hints of green and gold, suggesting hope for the environment. The reflection on either side is symbolic of what man has taken away from the environment. The heads represent the future of humanity, if we continue down the path of environmental devastation.
Influences
I was influenced by Ben Quilty’s ‘Rorschach’ works in my art practice as he works with layers of oil paint that have been pushed together.

Her Beauty and Her Terror
Name
Mila Purkovic

Each panel is a unique exploration of Australian natural beauty discovered from an environment often associated with terror and destruction.
Influences
I was influenced by artists Cy Twombly and Gerhard Richter.
Viva Voce and Popular Piano pieces from the 20th and 21st Century
Name
Sarah Kelly
Description
My Music I Major Work is a Viva Voce involving a 10-minute conversation on how the Keyboard has developed from the Harpsichord to the Modern Piano, and thereby, developed the form of the Concerto. I discuss how within the Baroque period, the most common keyboard instrument was the Harpsichord, which was mainly an accompanying instrument to the rest of the ensemble. In the Classical period, the keyboard developed into the Forte-Piano in which it held the melody and became more of the lead instrument, and finally in the Romantic Period with the development of the Piano along with the orchestra in the concerto.
My Major Work also consists of three performances. J.S.Bach's 'Prelude and Fugue in F minor', representing the topic, 'An Instrument and Its Repertoire'; 'Vignette' by Lindley Evans representing 'Music from the 20th and 21st century’ and Rachmaninov's 'Prelude in C Sharp Minor' representing the topic 'Popular Music'.
Influences
I took inspiration from various composers from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods in my analysis, as well as within my Viva. I play excerpts from three composers, including Bach, Mozart and Edvard Grieg to explain the development of the piano. I also drew inspiration from Lindley Evans and Sergei Rachmaninov.
Eden
Name
Marielle Sonido
Description
My English Extension II short story, ‘Eden’, explores the perpetually evolving relationship between transgression and social norms, questioning the definition of what is acceptable and what is not. Through its setting of an isolated boarding school, a cultural microcosm in which inherent human behaviours can be more easily observed, ‘Eden’ examines the implications of isolating those who refuse to conform to their community’s expectations. I aimed to explore how the method of punishing transgression, while beneficial in the short-term, can negatively impact both individuals and their communities. ‘Eden’ questions whether these impacts are worth defending subjective social expectations.
Influences
I was inspired by writers William Faulkner, Roald Dahl and Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
The Body Says What Words Cannot
Name
Dominique Mossman
Description
‘What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.’ Ralph Waldo Emerson. We use the human body to convey many different forms of communication. My Visual Art Major Work documents the potential of human expression and pays homage to the concept that body language is more powerful than words. In my video, I have captured my body expression with the use of black charcoal to physically imprint the tranquility of my emotive state. Applied over the visual, I have implemented soothing and scratching sounds in the making of my work to immerse the audience in this visual experience.
Influence
I was influenced by Georgia O'Keeffe, Wassily Kandinsky and Ian Strange.
Let’s Connect Activity Book
Name
Jasmine Bird
Description
The critical focus for my Design and Technology Major Project is to encourage intergenerational interaction and collaboration between older adults (60+) and young children (4-12) within a family. After a thorough investigation, I discovered the social gap between these age groups is gradually drifting apart, particularly in the western world. In response to this growing issue, my Major Design Project focused on creating an activity book. Within it, there are entertaining activities that require these age groups to interact and exchange knowledge and skills, encouraging meaningful bonding between these age groups.
Influence
I was inspired by seeing the effect that bridging the social gap between older adults and younger children had within families.

Mother

I've created my Dance Major Work to portray the emotions and moments that come with motherhood. Mothers experience indescribable moments of warmth, fear, friendship and pride. These individual experiences are portrayed within my work. The bond between a mother and child is an inextricable connection. One day, I aspire to be a loving mother to my children the same way my mother is to me.
Influence
I was influenced by my own personal experiences.
Mister A (Multi-sensory teaching assistant)
Name
Lara Selby
Description
My Design and Technology Major Work focuses on alleviating the vocal strain for primary school teachers. The lack of available products that address this issue confirmed the need to develop this concept. My final product utilises sensory prompts, particularly audio and visual, to attract and direct students’ attention during peak classroom activities. The device utilises a wireless control program and a Bluetooth sound system housed within a robot character that work together to offer teachers an alternative to addressing the class with their voice.
Influence
I was inspired by mother's experience in teaching a class of children aged between five and six years old. She often came home with a strained voice after teaching up to 60 kindergarten children a day in an open classroom setting and I wanted to alleviate this issue.
Continuum
Name
Sanna Aggarwal
Description
The start and the end are the same. An imprint in your parent’s mind from when you are born to the lingering devastation from your passing. But throughout your life, until the end, we leave a colourful trace on the world, the people we’ve met and within ourselves. Everyone leaves a different pattern in this never-ending world. Marks that are made by yourself or by others around you will not be seen by everyone. Each individual chooses what to show and what to keep secret. In my Visual Art Major Work, ‘I am me. You are you.’ I present a series of interactive photographs which enable the audience to move the panels and see many different aspects of the life of the individual being represented.
Influence
I was influenced by Yayoi Kusama and Andy Goldsworth.
The Year of Earthly Delights
Name
Ashley Cagauan
Description
As society faces adversity in a media-oriented world, the need to understand significant world events becomes overwhelming for the individual. My Visual Art body of work explores my personal reaction to social events that have occurred in the last year through my appropriation of Hieronymus Bosch’s ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’. Through graphic design, I created a digital work as a reflection of our macro society to reinforce the superficiality of our 21st Century world which has been divided into three scenes: heaven, earth and hell. This triptych becomes a spectrum for me to individually understand global events that have affected my own understanding of our world through my exposure to such tragedies and triumphs.
Influence
I was influenced by Hieronymus Bosch, Joan Ross, Guan Wei and Kentaro Yoshida.
The Dazzling, The Deceitful and The Deadly
Name
Ashley Cagauan
Description
My Society and Culture Personal Interest Project is an investigation into how and why the sexual commodification of the Femme Fatale in Western Cinema has become both a threat and an advocate for the patriarchy. I based my research on whether or not the hyper-sexualised portrayal of this 1940’s noir archetype was created as a figure of scopophilia to continue to satisfy the male gaze. My project focuses on whether a powerful and violent nature against the male has been recontextualised to empower female audiences in 21st Century cinema.
Influences
The Film Noir era, 'Hustlers', ‘Gone Girl’, and ‘Laura Mulvey’.

Laughing Wild
Name
Zoe Panagiotopoulos
Description
My Drama Individual Project is a monologue that explores the dysfunctional social connections my manic character has to maintain with society. She finds it difficult to empathise with the people around her and becomes very frustrated by daily tasks - even buying a can of tuna! Her goal is to get the audience to understand her frustration and the discourse that is her life by overwhelming them with movement, sound and language. I hope to entertain the audience through my maniacal depiction of certain individuals in society, and allow them to gain an understanding of our ambiguous social dynamic.
Influences
I was influenced by Theatre of the Absurd and Samuel Beckett, an absurdist playwright.

Blue
Name
Tara Wall
Description
The removal of people from public spaces has been significantly experienced in recent times, from the permanent closures of swimming pools to the forced-temporary lockdown due to COVID-19. Traditionally, these spaces have enabled community and been places for relationships to develop, with the concept of mateship being something crucial and characteristic of the Australian psyche. Through painting, photography, drawing and perspex figures, my Visual Art collection aims to represent different aspects of the significance of Australian culture and the parts of it which have been lost as a result of closures such as swimming pools.
Influences
Henri Matisse and Robert Rauschenberg
Be(hind) the consumer
Name
Olivia Briggs
Description
Captivating and colourful – yet underneath this superficial appearance lies anything but that. Such is our use of animals. My photographic series ‘Be(hind) a Consumer’, explores the use of animals, specifically horses, in the creation of widely marketed products. In a society fuelled by devout consumers sustained by trends and movements, there is not a moment for reflection on the source of our comforts. My Visual Art work stands as this reflection. Within the stylistic ‘product’ photographs of which all have required the use of by-products, I question the normalisation and acceptance of such practices. From jelly to glue or sugar, where do we draw the line? At what point does our use of a once living animal become ‘too’ much?
Influences
I sought out a variety of stylistic influences for my Major Work, these include artists Joseph Maida, Mari Maeda and Yuji Oboshi, Sharona Franklin and Jeff Koons.

The Tamil society is split into two, with one half allowing women to make their own decisions and the other half having strict social expectations of women. The ending demonstrates how she is unable to physically escape her life. Her only option is to escape through her imagination.

4. Makeda, Queen of Sheba
5. Queen Amina
6. Huda Sua’arawi
Name
Abigail Birgen
Description
Growing up, I learnt about the history of women, men, artists and subjects who all had one thing in common - they were white. I always wondered why people who resembled me were not considered to be an important part of world history. Were they too weak? Were they not important? Were we not as rich in history as Europe?
My Visual Art Major Work tells the story of significant African women and queens who were influential but unknown in today’s history. These women fought for their nation, for other women and against the white settlers who tried to take over their land. These women deserve to be acknowledged for their battles and strength.
Influences
My artwork has been highly inspired by Omar Victor Diop, Zanele Muholi and Cindy Sherman.

Influences
I have multiple influencers with one being Kathryn Del Barton. I have been inspired by her works since I was in Year 10, and created my first portraiture major appropriating her work.
Portrait of Taal Volcano
Name
Michaela De Leon
Description
Batangas is a cornucopia of natural wonders. I am fascinated that these wonders can be of pure destructive force, and yet its peoples view it as an everyday. Inspired by such, my Major Work for Visual Art is a personal dossier of the effects of the 2019 ashfall of ‘Taal Volcano’ in the province of Batangas, Philippines, my family’s hometown. It is composed of both wood panels and acrylic boards nailed together to juxtapose ideas of both destruction and hope. The plurality of print layers in several panels depict abstract interpretations of the physical state of Batangas’ most affected areas through sensitivity of colour, line and texture, bringing a sense of life into the work. The acrylic panels encapsulate simplistic and positive visual images of my family through fine laser work.
I pay homage to my family and the people of Batangas of their resilience and strength. Through transparent surfaces, they see visual representations of the destruction left behind them as they look forward to new beginnings.
Influences
My family here and in the Philippines and the people of the Philippines have influenced my work. After seeing many news articles and watching footage of the Taal Ashfall, I was inspired by the way that the Filipino people have responded to the event and adapted to change. My work is a personal reflection of my admiration towards their resilience.
